The heart of Banska Stiavnica is the historical Trinity Square (Slovak: Trojičné námestie) dominated by a monumental plague column. Columns is religious monuments built in honour of the Virgin Mary, in thanksgiving for the ending of a plague. The purpose of the Holy Trinity columns was usually simply to celebrate the church and the faith. The Holy Trinity Column in Banska Stiavnica was erected in 1711.
